Grumant, Kolsbey and a railroad
Ghost towns

Grumant and Kolsbey

GRUMANT IS A TOWN WHERE BITUMINOUS COAL DEPOSITS WERE FIRST DISCOVERED.

AFTER THAT, THE FIRST COAL MINE WAS BUILT HERE. GRUMANT AND KOLSBEY HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH A LIGHT NARROW-GAUGE RAILROAD SWEEPING AWAY THE SHORE.
THE MOST PART OF THE RAILROAD HAS BEEN OPENED AND ONLY A SHORT SECTION, LESS THAN ONE KILOMETER, HAS RUN THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN TUNNEL. AT THE OPEN SECTION OF THE RAILROAD, THERE HAS BEEN ERECTED A WOOD GALLERY, WHICH GUARDED THE RAILWAY FROM NASTY WEATHER.
IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF BOTH TOWNS, THERE HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED LOTS OF BUILDINGS FOR BOTH COMFORT AND LEISURE OF STAFF. THE EXTREMELY TRICKY TERRAIN OF GURMANT FINALLY GOT BOTH A CANTEEN AND A LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTER WHERE AT ONE TIME THERE WAS EVEN A MUSICAL ENSEMBLE.
AT THE MOMENT, SOME BUILDINGS IN KOLSBEY ARE AVAILABLE FOR VISITING ONLY WITH OUR COMPANY'S GUIDE. THE TOWN IS REACHABLE BOTH BY MOTORBOAT IN SUMMER AND BY SNOWMOBILE IN WINTER.
GRUMANT'S BUILDINGS ARE IN DISREPAIR, THEREFORE, VISITING THE TOWN IS POSSIBLE ONLY IN SUMMER AND DURING THE TIDE.
Location's features
The best you can find
Old railway
This railway bed has been connecting two towns, Grumant and Kolsbey, with a thin ghostlike railway thread.
Some places have remained an unmatched gallery guarded the railroad from Arctic snows.
Rusanov's memorial house museum

In 1912, Vladimir Rusanov's expedition headed to Svalbard where it discovered coal deposits of the finest quality in Kolsbey Cove.

After some time, a new expedition arrived here to accommodate the terrain where afterwards two towns appeared.

One of the two structures has survived until nowadays and born the name of Rusanov's memorial house museum. Inside, there is a museum of a remarkable polar explorer.

Derelict mines
In the past, here, there were numerous productive coal mines. At this time, all of them are abandoned.
Visiting the territory of the towns is possible only with our staff member.
