GRUMANT IS A TOWN WHERE BITUMINOUS COAL DEPOSITS WERE FIRST DISCOVERED.
AFTER THAT, THE FIRST COAL MINE WAS BUILT HERE. GRUMANT AND KOLSBEY HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH A LIGHT NARROW-GAUGE RAILROAD SWEEPING AWAY THE SHORE.In 1912, Vladimir Rusanov's expedition headed to Svalbard where it discovered coal deposits of the finest quality in Kolsbey Cove.
After some time, a new expedition arrived here to accommodate the terrain where afterwards two towns appeared.
One of the two structures has survived until nowadays and born the name of Rusanov's memorial house museum. Inside, there is a museum of a remarkable polar explorer.
